So, what exactly are Scent Walks?
Contrary to popular belief, they are not just a fancy name for standing in a field while your dog spends twenty minutes investigating the same blade of grass. Scent Walks are a structured activity built around a known target odour placed within the environment. The aim isn’t to teach dogs to search, indicate or perform a task. Instead, we create opportunities for calm engagement, anticipation and independent decision-making through the power of scent. The dog’s job is simple: Explore.
Investigate.
Make decisions.
Occasionally convince their handler that a patch of grass contains the secrets of the universe.
The handler’s job is even simpler:
Stay neutral.
Observe.
Resist the overwhelming urge to point, direct or tell the dog what they “should” be doing.
